Being a first-generation college student gave Carly Fraser a lot to think about. She was not overly concerned about academics because she had earned college credits while in high school.

The two things that worried Fraser the most about college were money and how to get help to overcome an issue with spatial awareness.

“I was really stressed about money and finances. My mom is a single parent, and money is important,” Fraser said. “After I talked with TRIO, they connected me with Financial Aid at Albion. I calmed down and didn’t have to worry so much.”

“TRIO really helped me succeed by helping me navigate college,” Fraser noted. “It gave me a mentor who has helped me find my way around campus and guided me through the college experience. That is important because no one in my family has ever gone to college.

“I have meetings with my mentor once a month, and she is there for me whenever I need anything. I don’t know what I would do without him.”

Fraser is still determining what she wants to do after graduation, but thanks to TRIO and Albion College, she’s ready for the future.

TRIO Student Support Services is a federally funded program that works with first-generation college students, those with physical or learning disabilities and others. The program focuses on success coaching, peer mentoring, academic tutoring, career selection, financial literacy and graduate program guidance.
