Beau Brockett, ’19, Recognized by Michigan Press Association
Beau Brockett, ’19, was one of 12 Michigan college students to be awarded a $1,000 scholarship earlier this month by the Michigan Press Association (MPA) Foundation.
TheEnglish-Creative Writingmajor from Richmond is the managing editor ofThe Pleiad, the Albion College student newspaper. He is also a member of theGerald R. Ford Institute for Leadership in Public Policy and Serviceand runs for themen’s cross countryteam.
“(Beau) offers a rare combination of solid news judgment, narrative storytelling skills, unflagging energy and receptiveness to criticism,” said Glenn Deutsch, visiting assistant professor of English and advisor forThe Pleiad. “He’d be the first one I’d try to hire if I were at a newspaper.”
“I’m thrilled to be a recipient of the MPA’s Community Journalism Scholarship, and I can’t thankThe Pleiadteam and the English Department enough for the on-the-ground experiences they’ve given me,” said Brockett (right), who will be recognized in May 2018 at the MPA’s annual convention in East Lansing. “The most local news is often the least reported. It’s great to be a part of a publication that’s working to change that.”
TheMichigan Press Association Foundationwas created in 1980 to advance community journalism by fostering learning, sponsoring research and promoting public awareness of the importance of a free press. Since 1990 it has awarded more than 220 scholarships to Michigan college juniors and seniors.
