Story focuses on how state plans to retain, attract educated and talented young people

Senior Emily Abramczyk, ’24 and juniors Monika Rosas, ’25 and Kearney Miller, ’25 are three Albion College students with differing ideas about where they want to live and work after graduation. Two may leave the state after graduation, while one is interested in pursuing opportunities in Michigan.

The three students spoke to Crain’s Detroit Business for a story about Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Growing Michigan Together Council and how the state is tackling the challenge of keeping and attracting more educated and talented young people amid a slowing state population growth rate. Having abundant cultural opportunities, the ability to walk around safely, and being situated near specific career opportunities were among the items the students described as points of interests in their post-college destinations.

Eddie Visco, executive director for Albion’s Gerald R. Ford Institute for Leadership in Public Policy and Service, told the industry publication that “14 of the 19” 2023 graduates of the Institute remain in the state and that interest in the Detroit metro appeared to be rebounding.
