Albion College’s Definition of a Diverse, Equitable, Inclusive, and Learner-Centered Environment

Albion College defines diversity, equity, and inclusion as essential to our mission of academic excellence, personal growth, social responsibility, and student success. Our commitment to nondiscrimination ensures that all students, faculty, and staff have equal access to opportunities, resources, and experiences, regardless ofprotected identities. In compliance with federal and state civil rights laws, including Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Michigan’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act of 1976, and Public Act 6 of 2023, we foster an inclusive environment where all community members are valued and supported.

Albion College upholds a fair and transparent admissions process that does not require an essay and does not consider an individual’sprotected identityin making admissions decisions or awarding financial aid. We ensure that no applicant is given preferential treatment or denied admission based solely on their protected identity, reinforcing our commitment to equal opportunity for all students.

All Albion College programs, success initiatives, student organizations, committees, graduations, celebrations, and historical observances are open to all students, ensuring that no one is excluded based onany protectedidentity. We actively promote a welcoming and inclusive campus through community-building events, educational programs, and training opportunities designed to support student well-being.

As part of this commitment, we maintain a bias reporting system for students, faculty, and staff to report incidents of bias—acts of hostility or negative bias, whether intentional or unintentional, based onprotectedidentity. These incidents, which may include slurs, degrading language, graffiti, or intimidation, can contribute to unwelcoming environments, particularly on a small residential campus. The bias reporting system helps us identify systemic patterns and informs the Office of Belonging strategies for education and response.

Additionally, our policies reflect our dedication to fairness, due process, and free expression. We do not discriminate in disciplinary actions based onany protected identity, nor do weimplement mandatory training or compelled statements that couldpenalize students for speech protected under the First Amendment. Our approach aligns with Title IX’sand Title VI’srequirement for fair, consistent, and impartial treatment in handling complaints related to discrimination and harassment, ensuring that all students receive due process and equitable support.

Through these commitments, Albion College continues to cultivate a learning environment rooted in respect, empowering all members of our community to thrive.
